Heating controls & wiring
Heating controls decide when your boiler fires and where the heat goes. Badly wired or out-of-date controls waste energy, leave some rooms cold and can keep the boiler running when nobody is home. We fit and wire thermostats, programmers and zone valves, and we can rewire a whole heating control system when the existing one has grown into a tangle of junction boxes. We also fit smart heating controls, from a single app-controlled thermostat to room-by-room heating with smart radiator valves.

What's included
Heating controls & wiring: what you get
- Room thermostats, programmers and timers, wired or wireless
- Smart heating controls such as Hive, Nest and Tado, with control from your phone, schedules for heating and hot water, and room-by-room zoning with smart radiator valves
- Motorised zone valves and S-plan or Y-plan control wiring, so heating and hot water, or different floors, can run independently
- A wiring centre that brings the boiler, pump, zone valves, thermostats and programmer together in one tidy, labelled box
- Cylinder thermostats and boiler interlock, so the boiler only fires when a room or the hot water cylinder calls for heat
- Underfloor heating thermostats and wiring centres
- A fused supply and local isolation for the boiler and controls, tested and certified to BS 7671
- Fault finding when the heating or hot water will not come on and the cause is electrical
How it works
Heating controls & wiring in three steps
- 1Look at the systemWe check how the existing controls are wired, what the boiler supports and what you want the heating to do, then give you a fixed price.
- 2Install and wireNew controls are fitted and wired, through a labelled wiring centre where the system needs one. The heating is only off while we connect it up.
- 3Test and hand overWe test the wiring, check that every zone works on its own, set up the programme with you and issue a certificate for the electrical work.
Why 2K for heating controls
Heating control wiring is where small mistakes cause big headaches: a zone valve that never closes, or a boiler that never switches off. We wire controls neatly, label every connection in the wiring centre and test each zone, so the system does what the programmer says and anyone working on it later can see how it fits together.
Questions
Questions about heating controls
Do you work on the boiler itself?
We wire up to the boiler's electrical supply and its control terminals. Any work on the gas supply or inside the boiler is for a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we are happy to work alongside yours.
What is the difference between S-plan and Y-plan?
Both control a boiler that heats a hot water cylinder. S-plan uses a separate two-port zone valve for the heating and the hot water, and one more for each extra heating zone. Y-plan uses a single three-port mid-position valve. S-plan is easier to extend with more zones and easier to fault-find.
Can I fit a smart thermostat to my existing heating?
Usually yes. Most combi boilers and S-plan or Y-plan systems can take one, sometimes with a separate receiver or a change to the wiring. We check what your boiler supports before you buy.
Are smart radiator valves worth it?
They let you heat only the rooms you use, each on its own schedule, instead of the whole house to one temperature. They work best with a smart thermostat from the same system, which fires the boiler whenever any room calls for heat.
The heating works but the hot water does not. Is it electrical?
Often it is. A sticking zone valve, a failed valve motor or a wiring fault in the controls are common causes. We test the controls and valves, then repair or replace what has failed.
